CNC Machining 3004 (AlMn1Mg1): Parameters, Tooling & Surface Finish Tips

CNC Machining 3004 (AlMn1Mg1) — 3xxx Series Material

This article provides essential technical information about 3004 (AlMn1Mg1), a manganese-magnesium alloy from the 3xxx series, known for its excellent formability, moderate strength, and superior corrosion resistance. 3004 is widely used in sheet metal forming and structural applications, but it also offers good machinability for precision CNC parts requiring a balance of strength and ductility. Dongguan Stirling Metal Products Co., Ltd. specializes in machining 3004 for components in the beverage, automotive, and building industries.

CNC Machining Parameters

3004 is a soft, ductile alloy that machines similarly to 1100 but with slightly higher strength. Use sharp, polished carbide tools and moderate cutting speeds to avoid built-up edge. The following parameters are for H13 carbide with DLC coating.

Operation Cutting Speed (m/min) Feed (mm/rev) Depth of Cut (mm) Coolant
Turning (rough) 250 – 400 0.10 – 0.25 1.0 – 2.5 Water-miscible (5-8%)
Turning (finish) 350 – 500 0.05 – 0.12 0.2 – 0.5 Mist or air blast
Milling (rough) 200 – 350 0.08 – 0.20 (mm/tooth) 1.0 – 2.0 Water-miscible
Milling (finish) 300 – 450 0.04 – 0.10 (mm/tooth) 0.2 – 0.5 Mist or air blast
Drilling 80 – 150 0.05 – 0.15 Water-miscible

Applications

  • Beverage Industry: Can bodies, ends, and tabs (sheet form); machined fill nozzles and inspection fixtures.
  • Building & Construction: Roofing sheets, siding, gutters, and structural panels requiring corrosion resistance.
  • Automotive: Heat shields, fuel tank components, and interior trim parts.
  • Chemical Equipment: Storage tanks and piping for mild chemical environments.
  • Custom CNC Parts: Machined brackets, enclosures, and prototypes where formability and corrosion resistance are critical.

CNC Machining Tips

Tool Material: Uncoated or DLC-coated carbide (ISO K10/K20). For high-volume production, PCD tools are recommended for extended life.

Coating: DLC (diamond-like carbon) reduces friction and prevents built-up edge. Uncoated polished carbide also works well.

Coolant: Water-miscible coolant at 5-8% for roughing; mist or compressed air for finishing to avoid thermal distortion. 3004 is prone to galling, so adequate lubrication is essential.

Heat Treatment: 3004 is not heat treatable. Use H32 (strain hardened and stabilized) or H34 tempers for improved machinability. O temper (annealed) is very soft and gummy.

Chip Control: Use sharp, positive rake tools and high feed rates. For drilling, use peck cycles to break chips. Avoid dwell marks that cause work hardening.

Surface Finish: Achievable Ra 0.4 – 0.8 µm. For anodized parts, a uniform surface is essential; use finishing passes with low feed rates.
